Activities of Year 2005-06

1st Awareness programme was organized on 26th August 2005 (Friday). It was a seminar on MENTAL DEPRESSION AMONG STUDENTS. Dr. Soumitra Basu, eminent Psychiatrist and Dr. Mohit Ranadeep, psychologist were the main speakers. About 150 students and teachers participated in the programme.

2nd programme was organized on 10th September 2005 (Saturday). NSS volunteers took part in an elocution competition on ROLE OF STUDENTS IN PROTECTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENT. There was a Poster Competition Cum Exhibition on the same day. Dr. P.K. Das, Secretary Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society was invited to enlighten the students and teachers of college on the epidemic of Dengue.

The most attractive event of course was the performance of a drama on environmental awareness by the volunteers of NSS Unit. The play KOTHAY CHALECHHI (Where we are going) was recorded and telecasted later.

3rd programme was of Health Check-up and Blood Group Detection. It was on 23rd September 2005 about 300 patients were treated and some were served with necessary medicines also. Blood group detection was done for 150 students and staff. Dr. P.K. Das, Dr. T.K. Chatterjee, Dr. P.K. Guin, Dr. D.K. Mondal, Dr. A.K. Dutta, Dr. A. Mallick, Dr. (Mrs.) C. Jyot and Dr. (Mrs.) S. Hazra were among the doctors.

4th programme was on 5th October 2005 (Wednesday). Dr. Manju Dutta Choudhury, former Professor of School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata, Dr. Asit Dutta, Gynaecologist, Dr. J. Guchit (Pediatrician) spoke on the necessity of awareness of among prospective parents about Thalassaemia Carrier Test was done for 30 students.

5th programme was a Relief Work on 6th October 2005 (Thursday). NSS Volunteers distributed garments among the poor residents of Mahesh Colony, Serampore.

After the Puja Holidays on 18th November 2005, 6th programme of the session was scheduled. A Free Health Check-up programme was organized for the poor residents of Ward No. 8 of Serampore Municipality. About 150 patience were treated by Dr. P.K. Das, Dr. (Mrs.) R. De Nag, & Dr. (Mrs.) S. Hazra. Medicines were also supplied free of cost.

On 1st December 2005 NSS Unit jointly organized a Rally as a part of World Aids Day Observance. About 300 boys and girls took part in the Rally. A street drama “ALOR DISHARI” was performed in 4 important road crossings of Serampore. Near Railway station NSS Volunteers participating a Rally took part in a Quiz Contest organized by West Bengal Aids Control Board, 4 of them won prizes.

NSS Unit organized Free Health Check-up, Blood Group Detection, Water Arsenic Test etc. in their stall on 13th – 15th December 2005 at Serampore College Science Festival. Eminent Doctors, Analyst from All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, demonstrators, and technicians from Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society helped the volunteers to serve more than a thousand persons. 403 persons’ blood group detection were done and reports were handed over.

On 12th January 2006, NSS Unit of Serampore College celebrated National Youth Day. In the afternoon, a seminar was organized on Biomedical Waste Management. Eminent speakers were Sub-divisional Health Officer Dr. S.S. Siraj, Prof. Diptarup Kohli of All India Institute Hygiene and Public Health. Dr. Anupam Banerjee and Dr. Subhankar Chaudhury of Serampore College, Dr. Subhas Bhattacharya, Naturalist and Dr. P.K. Das, Secretary, Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society. As a part of this programme NSS Volunteers conducted a survey on Biomedical Waste Management in hospitals, Nursing Homes, Diagnostic Centres and Clinics of Serampore Sub-division.

On 4th and 5th February 2006, volunteers of NSS Unit participated in the Health Fair (Swasthya Mela) 2006 with their models for spreading awareness on Biomedical Waste Management. The volunteers staged two skits, one on environmental awareness and the other on against violence against women. The model was rewarded with the Champions’ trophy.

On 26th February, 2006, one Free Health Check-up Camp was organized in the Mahesh Colony area of Serampore Municipality in the club premises of “Ankur”. Doctors treated about 500 patients. Medicines were also distributed free of cost. More than one hundred persons underwent eye check up. Blood group determination was done for about seventy persons. Doctors present were Dr. P.K. Das, Dr. Asit Dutta, Dr. T.K. Chatterjee, Dr. Sudhamoy Sen, Dr. Prakash Pal, Dr. Sharmistha Hazra.

On 8th March 2006 an awareness programme was organized as a part of Women Day Clebration at CLRC Hall. Miss Akatoli Chishi, Miss Sangeeta Nandi and Miss Soumita Banerjee presented three academic papers on the relevance of the celebrations as well as the present state of affairs in different parts of the world. Mr. Murari Bhaduri, formerly manager of a nationalized bank and now one of the office-bearers of an NGO working for women development delivered a speech on the availability of funds for women entrepreneurs on different self employment opportunities were highlighted. At the end of the programme some music and dance was presented focusing the power of women. The programme ended with the song by girl students: “We shall overcome someday…………”

Health Check-up Camp of January 29th and March 22nd 2006, could not be organized because of non-availability of funds. Workshop on Personality Development and Employability is also postponed for the next year for lack of money.

NSS activities for organizing awareness programme and community service drew attention of all the students and society at large. Local newspapers, T.V. channels even the dailies from Kolkata highlighted the services catered by the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Serampore College.

Besides above mentioned awareness and health checkup programme in the adopted slum NSS unit of Serampore College ran as Special Coaching Centre for School Drop-outs near Serampore Railway Station. Special assistances were provided for the needy students and people at large by the volunteers which were decided time to time in the weekly meetings of NSS unit.

Activities of Year 2006-07

On 7th April 2006 NSS volunteers observed World Health Day. Mr. Sudipta Biswas, eminent Physiotherapist and Yoga Practitioner delivered speech with demonstration DR. P.K. Das, Secretary, Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society spoke on the implication of the UNESCO slogan for the HEALTH DAY 2006. DR. Nemai Mal of Students’ Health Home, Serampore Branch appreciated the NSS volunteers for organizing health programmes.

As 1st May International Labour Day was a holiday for the college. The day was observed on 29th April (30th April 2006 was Sunday) on that occasion Vice-principal Prof. Prabir Kumar Das was the main speaker. As that day was the last working day for the retiring Vice-principal, NSS volunteers bade farewell to him with some memento prepared by the NSS volunteers. The portrait painted by volunteers was appreciated by every body present there.

On 21st May NSS volunteers actively participated on 6 Pulse Polio Immunization Booths under Serampore Municipality.

On 5th June 2006 NSS volunteers visited Chandernagore KMDA Sewerage Water Treatment Plant as a part of their awareness programme on the occasion of World Environment Day. They visited the Pollution Analysis Laboratory there. This was a very good and educative experience for them.

From 1st July to 7th July 2006 NSS volunteers observed Bonomahatsav Week. On these days students planted saplings inside and outside the college campus. Fencing was made for protection of small plants from cattle.

15th July 2006 was the General Orientation Programme for Newly Enrolled Volunteers. It was organized in the CLRC Hall. About 125 students participated in this programme.

Special Orientation Programme on Social Awareness through Acting was organized at CLRC Hall on 5th August 2006. Prof. Ratna Datta of Sanskrit Department discussed on the role of Sanskrit Drama in spreading social awareness Prof. Bhaskar Choudhuri of Bengali Department analyzed different aspects of Bengali drama and presented a short history of Bengali theatre. NSS volunteers performed plays on that occasion.

12th August 2006 volunteers of NSS unit along with the students of Theology department cleaned Carey Cemetery on the eve of 245th birth Anniversary of William Carey, founder of Serampore College.

15th August 2006 was a holiday for the students. NSS volunteers observed the Independence Day by encouraging school boys and girls of a neighbouring village. Volunteers decorated the exhibits of exhibition made by the students of North End Modern School of Pearapur Gram Panchayet under Serampore-Uttarpara Block.

From 17th to 19th August, 2006 an exhibition was organized on the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of William Carey. NSS volunteers prepared models, charts and other exhibits and demonstrated those.

26th August 2006 Special Orientation Programme on Office Procedure Documentation and Reporting was organized at CLRC Hall. About 75 students participated in the programme. Prof. Mausumi Bhattacharyya explained account keeping of organizations while programme officer of NSS Unit, Serampore College discussed on General Office Procedure and Documentation. Mr. Gautam Bandyopadhyay of Ananda Bazar Patrika discussed on reporting for Print Media and Mrinal Kanti Dutta of Aajtak discussed on reporting for Electronic Media.

5th September 2006 NSS volunteers observed Teachers’ Day in a very humble way. Classes were suspended on that day for university examinations. Volunteers made greetings cards themselves for their beloved teachers and handed over those and expressed their gratitude to their teachers.

16th September 2006. A big seminar was organized on Personality Development and Employability at CLRC Hall. About 125 students and 25 teachers were present. DR. Swati Datta of English Department presented a paper on English for Employability. Prof. DR. Partha Chattopadhyay, eminent journalist and social reformer organized half day workshop with his team of experts. Different aspects of Personality Development were made clear for the students and teachers. 24th September 2006 NSS Day, was a Sunday, so Annual Prize Distribution of NSS unit was held on 16th September at the end of the seminar.

14th November 2006 NSS volunteers observed Children’s Day under leadership of Ms. Dipanwita Ganguly 30 children from different states of India assembled in CLRC. They performed in their own languages. NSS volunteers made masks and balloons and gifted to these children.

24th November and 25th November 2006 Post Centenary Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee of Calcutta University invited NSS volunteers to arrange hospitality for the delegates and resource persons coming on the occasion of international seminar at Serampore College.

1st December 2006 was International AIDS Prevention Day. An Awareness programme was organized at CLRC Hall. DR. P.K. Das, Secretary, Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society and DR. Nayeemuddin of Serampore Walsh Hospital interacted with NSS volunteers on AIDS. A short drama was directed and presented by NSS volunteers on HIV infection.

5th December 2006 was celebrated as International Volunteers’ Day. Role of Volunteers in Social Transformation was discussed in NSS room.

10th December 2006 was a Sunday, so Human Rights Day was observed on 12th December 2006 at CLRC Hall. About 80 students participated in the awareness programme organized on that occasion. Advocate Soumi Banerjee of Serampore Sub-Divisional Court explained Different Aspects of Human Rights.

12th January 2007 NSS volunteers observed National Youth Day at CLRC Hall. About 50 students participated in the programme. Mr. Rabin Behura, an Expert in Human Resource Management organized a workshop on Motivation.

3rd February 2007 one Health Awareness Programme was organized at CLRC Hall. DR. P.K. Das and DR. D.K. Mondal, of Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society spoke on different aspects of Health Awareness. Health Check-up and Blood Group Tests were also arranged. About 60 students participated in the programme.

8th March 2007 was International Women’s Day. NSS volunteers observed the day in a befitting manner. Advocate Soumi Banerjee explained the different laws of the land for the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence. Interactive session continued for more than One hour. Many teachers (including Principal & Vice-Principal) and students participated in the interactive session.

14th March and 15th March 2007 NSS volunteers actively participated in a 2 day workshop on AIDS and Trafficking of Women. The workshop was organized by Immanuel Ministries of Calcutta and sponsored by UNDP (TAHA). Volunteers presented a play on trafficking of women composed and directed by them.

Besides above mentioned awareness and health checkup programme NSS unit of Serampore College ran as Special Coaching Centre for School Drop-outs near Serampore Railway Station. Activities of Year 2007-08

4th August 2007 NSS unit of Serampore College organized a workshop to motivate students, specially new comers to social work. About 100 freshers, both boys and girls participated in the workshop.

On 11th August a special orientation programme was organized for the volunteers’ who joined NSS in the 2007-2008 session. Experts in different fields of social service and cultural activities addressed the students.

All NSS volunteers actively participated in the 246th Birth Anniversary of Rev. Dr. William Carey, founder of Serampore College on 17th August 2007.

On 20th August, 2007 on the 1st day of Satbhabna Fortnight Observance, all NSS volunteers assembled in the Arts block and took oath to make national integration stronger. Oath taking ceremony was led by Mr. Tanmoy Mukherjee and Anuradha Ghosh, both volunteers of NSS.

A grand cultural show was organized in the historical main hall of Serampore College as a part of Satbhabna Fortnight Observance, 2007 on 1st September 2007. Music and Dance of the states of Bengal, Assam, Orissa, Nagaland, Mizoram, Kerala and Tamil Nadu was presented by the students of Serampore College representing different states of India.

On 24th September 2007 NSS day was observed in Spite of heavy rain. A Seminar lecture on ‘Learning Disability among Students’ was organized. Renowned social Psychologist and Author Mr. Mohit Ranadip of MON Foundation addressed the students and volunteers present.

Consultant of Kolkata Field office of UNICEF Mr. Ranjit Mukherjee addressed a large audience of college students and volunteers on 29th September 2007. The topic of the awareness programme was ‘The role of youth in Disaster Mitigation programme’. An essay competition was organized by the NSS Unit. The topic of the Essay competition was ‘Healthy Youth for Healthy India’. Essays submitted were assessed by Dr. Swati Datta and Dr. Isha Paul.

Serampore Sub-Division Legal Aid Committee invited Honorable Justice Mr. Pinaki Ghosh of Kolkata High Court in a legal awareness programme held in the Main Hall of Serampore College on 17th November 2007. Many other dignitaries along with Senior Government Officials like District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Officer et. al. were present. NSS volunteers actively participated in this legal awareness programme.

A few NSS volunteers participated in the training workshop on PROTECTION OF CONSUMERS RIGHTS held at Chinsurah, District Head Quarter between 27th and 29th November 2007.

Like previous years NSS volunteers organized an awareness programme on 1st December 2007. The topic of discussion was role of students in AIDS awareness.

From 11th December to 17th December 2007, UTSAV 2007 was organized in the college premises. Besides cultural programme, Book Fair, Handicraft fair and Information Technology Fair were parts of the UTSAV. NSS volunteers displayed awareness posters and carried motivation programmes in the Fair premises.

One day seminar on NSS awareness was organized in the Law Library Hall of the Calcutta University on 24th December 2007. Programme officer of Serampore College unit actively participated in the seminar along with two volunteers.

On the occasion of National Youth Day celebration, a two-day programme was organized. On 11th January a Seminar was organized on Employment Opportunity for 21st Century Youth. Representatives from different career development organizations came. Representatives from CARREOGRAPH gave an audio visual presentation on employment opportunity in Pharmaceuticals Industry. Mr. Sajal Mitra, course director, Triumph Institute of Management Education (TIME) conducted a participatory session on Group Discussion and Interview Technique. Mr. Robin Behura, Management Expert delivered a talk on motivation for self-improvement. An Audio Visual presentation on placement opportunities in Electronic media by Animaster Productions Ltd. was appreciated by all students present. Mr. Lokenath Chattterjee, President, Serampore Kendriya Natya Sangsad presented a paper on work opportunities of young actor and actresses.

12th January, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda was celebrated by the volunteers as National Youth Day. Dr. Pranab Kumar Banerjee, President, Vivekananda Bhabanuragi Yuba Sammelan, Hooghly district discussed the need of studying the writings and speeches of Swami Vivekananda. He made booklets on inspiring talks of swami Vivekananda available for all the participants free of cost by courtesy of Ramkrishna Institute of Culture, Golpark. A 20 hrs. course on development of communication skills and personality was inaugurated on this day. Dr. Swati Datta, Prof. Bhaskar Choudhury, Prof. Sujata Das, Prof. Pradipta Sau discussed the necessity of the course. Classes were arranged every Saturday till May, 2008 between 1:30 & 3:30 p.m. in the Room No. A-23. 30 students mostly of 3rd year B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. participated in the course.

Organizers of 8th Hooghly District Little Magazine Fair formerly invited a team of NSS volunteers for day-to-day management held between 19th & 22nd January, 2008 in the Gandhi Maidan.

On 8th March 2008 a programme was organized; this year, for the International Women’s Day Celebration, unlike previous years, no eminent person was invited to address the occasion. NSS volunteers prepared themselves with the relevant information regarding the situation of women in India and abroad. Some students presented the views of radical thinkers regarding women liberation. Traditional and moderate views on women liberation and development were also highlighted and discussed. Three short plays were presented by the volunteers. One act play on Trafficking of women was presented by the students of Communicative English.

Ms. Madhumita Banerjee, Educationist, Parivar Seva Samiti (a national level NGO) visited adopted slum in ward no. 8 of Serampore Municipality on 15th April 2008. she guided NSS volunteers in conducting Health Survey in the area.

No Health Check up programme could be organized because of non-availability of doctors on the scheduled date. Ten day camp could not be held as the guardians were unwilling to allow their wards for night stay in the camp. The unit may organize day camp if permitted and instructed by the co-ordinator, NSS, CU.

On 30th June, 2008 16 NSS volunteers participated in an Awareness Programme on solid waste management organize by KMDA in Rishra Rabindara Bhawan.

NSS volunteers conducted regular surveys in the adopted slum area. Need based helping measures were taken up. Before the puja vacation, volunteers collected more than hundred sets of garments to be distributed among the distressed people.

Activities of Year 2008-09

Throughout the year 2008-09 NSS Unit of Serampore College conducted several regular activities both in the college campus and also in the adopted slum area. Besides NSS Volunteers were deputed to work with Government Agencies and NGOs in different areas of Serampore, Rishra and Baidyabati.

On 30th June, 2008 15 Volunteers joined the programme of Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project and expressed their willingness to work for the cleanliness of the society at large. These volunteers worked with the project for several months and earned appreciation for NSS.

On 2nd August, 2008 an Environment Awareness Programme was organised in the historic Main Hall of the college. The famous film “The Inconvenient Truth” produced by Mr. Al Gore, the Nobel Laureate Environmentalist was screened. Mr. Ranjit Mukherjee, Dy. Project Manager (Social), Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project replied the questions raised by the volunteer participants, students and others.

On 16th August, 2008 Orientation Programme was organised for newly enrolled volunteers. Senior volunteers described their experience of doing social work as a volunteer of NSS. Some former students who were once volunteers of the unit also assembled to encourage the newly enrolled volunteers. A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion.

On 17th August, 2008 Birth Anniversary of William Carey, the founder of the college was celebrated through different programmes. One hour Awareness Programme on Environmental Issues was organized by NSS unit in collaboration Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project. An audio visual presentation was made on citizens responsibilities for protection of environment from pollution. NSS volunteers were actively involved in management of whole day programme.

On 21st August, 2008 the NSS unit of the college observed Satbhabna Day. Volunteers took oath for National Integration. Patriotic songs were sung.

On 6th September, 2008 a seminar on Social Aspects of Environmental Cleanliness was organised by the NSS unit in which Ms. Wallang, Dy. Programme Adviser, National Service Scheme, Eastern Region presided over the inaugural session. Mr. Ranjit Mukherjee. Dy. Project Manager (Social), Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project delivered key-note address. Two speakers delivered audio visual presentation in two technical sessions the resource persons were Ms. Kuhu Banerjee and Ms. Trisha Sen Sharma, both sociologist working with Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project. Session on Rehabilitation of Rag-Pickers: Problems and Prospects was thought provoking.

On 8th September, 2008 five volunteers of the unit along with Programme Officer and Principal of the college participated in the programme organised by the University of Calcutta in the Centenary Auditorium of the University.

Before the Puja Holidays volunteers of the unit collected about 200 sets of garments which were distributed among the destitute through Annada Ashram, Bhadreswar.

On 1st December, 2008 AIDS Prevention Day was observed. An Awareness Programme was organised on the occasion. Serampore College unit of Red Ribon Club was inaugurated. A rally from college to Serampore Station was also organized.

On 24th December, 2008 twenty volunteers of the unit accompanied by the Programme Officer actively participated in the Ambedkar Utsav held at Centenary Auditorium, Calcutta University.

On 10th January 2009, 10 volunteers of NSS unit joined one-day workshop on Environmental Awareness at Nalikul, Hooghly organised by Simultala Conservationists.

National Youth Day was celebrated on 13th January, 2009 by the unit. Speakers highlighted the duties and responsibilities of young people in nation building.

14 volunteers of NSS unit managed an Awareness Stall in the Ninth Hooghly District Little Magazine Fair in the Gandhi Maidan, Serampore from 19th to 22nd January, 2009.

Volunteers of NSS unit actively participated in the Republic Day celebration in college campus.

International Women’s Day was celebrated on 7th March, 2009 as 8th March was a Sunday. Mr. Sajal Mitra, Director, Triumphant Institute of Management Education came to motivate prospective entrepreneurs from NSS volunteers and local youth. Ms. Camelie Jhonson, Headmistress Sacred Heart Day School and eminent social worker discussed about the problems of distressed women. Students of Communicative English presented a Drama highlighting some problems of working women. Prof. Sribas Goswami of the Dept. of Sociology explain the position of women in different fields through presentation of data. Annual Prize Distribution of the unit was also done on that day. Some relevant dance, music, recitation and cultural shows were also performed.

On 28th March, 2009 NSS unit organised a seminar on local History in collaboration with Gram Janapad and Centre for Archeological Studies and Training, Eastern India. Dr. Himadri Banerjee, Guru Nanak Professor of History presided over the seminar, Mr. Asit Patra, Sabhadhipati of Hooghly Zilla Parishad inaugurated the seminar. Prof. Ratan Lal Chakrabotry, former Professor of Dhaka University, Mr. Asit Dutta, Dr. Gautam Sengupta, Dr. Sekhar Bhowmik, Prof. Sunil Das and Prof. Somsankar Roy were among the speakers. Principal of the college, two Vice-Principals along with many eminent persons coming from distant places actively participated in the programme. Mr. Kunal Chatterjee, Superintendent of NSS Cell, Calcutta University was also present.

On 30th March, 2009 Mr. Nitish Biswas, Programme Coordinator, National Service Scheme, Calcutta University visited NSS Unit of Serampore College. He discussed with Programme Officer and Vice-Principal (ASC) on the problems of implementation of circulars issued regarding NSS Programme. Mr. Biswas appreciated sincerity and obedience of the volunteers of the unit.

Activities of Year 2008-09

10-Days Special Camping Programme
(5th December to 14th December 2008)
Theme : Healthy youth for healthy India

Special Camping Programme Serampore College NSS Unit was organised in the adopted of slum area of the unit in Ward No. 8 under Serampore Municipality. Preparation for the camp started months before.

On 5th December 2008 53 (fifty three) volunteers assembled in the morning. Inaugural Programme started at 11:30 a.m. Mr. Amiya Mukherjee, Chairman of Serampore Municipality inaugurated the programme. Mr. Ranjit Mukherjee, Deputy Project Manager (Social), Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project discussed on the theme of the camp and encouraged the student volunteers. Principal, Programme Officer, Councilor of ward no. 8 also encouraged the camp participants on the occasion. After refreshment break awareness programme was organised on Population Education and AIDS Control. Resource person was Ms. Kuhu Banerjee, Sociologist working with Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project.

On 6th December 2008 the awareness programme was on Low Cost Food with High Nutrition Value. Resource persons were Dr. Sandip Mukherjee & Prof. Anadi Roychoudhuri, both belonging to Physiology Department of Serampore College. These two Professors initiated a Nutrition Survey.Survey was conducted by the volunteers.

On 7th December, 2008 besides daily project activities and cultural programme Free Health Checkup Programme was taken up DR. Chandi Charan Mondal and DR. Ashoke Chatterjee, checked Patients and prescribed medicines.

On 8th December, 2008, skill learning programme for local youth started. Mr. Samarendra Bhattacharyya of Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission Vocational Training Centre trained on Auto Mechanism. Awareness programme of the day was on Mother’s Health and Child Immunization. The resource person was Ms. Jyoti Das, Sociologist of Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project.

On 9th December 2008 Ms. Trisha Sensharma, Sociologist of Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project spoke on Personal Hygiene and Health in the awareness programme. (Besides project work and cultural programme volunteers participated in campus cleanliness programme for six days). Mr. Kunal Chatterjee, Superintendent, NSS Cell Calcutta University encouraged NSS Volunteers for their enthusiasm and sincerity.

On 10th December 2008, on the occasion of Human Rights Day an Audio Visual Programme on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights was presented to girls volunteers and ladies of the adopted area by an eminent NGO, Sanhita. Participating Resource Persons were Ms. Amrita Rudra and Ms. Salini Gupta. Young boys participated in the skilled development programme. Trainer of the day was Mr. Ramesh Mondal from Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission Vocational Training Centre. In the evening awareness programme was organised on Empowerment of Women and Protection of their Rights. Resource person was Mrs. Swagata Bhattachryya, Editor, Hooghly Janasanjog and a member of District Cell of Maitreyee.

On 11th December 2008 an awareness programme was on Preventive Health Care Yoga, Freehand and Other Exercises. The resource person was Mr. Sudipta Biswas, Yoga Therapist. Skill Learning Programme on Welding was also organised on that day for local youth. The trainer was Mr. Achintya Bhattacharyya of Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission Vocational Training Centre. Mr. Tapan Bhattacharyya, Employment Director, Hooghly District guided local youth regarding the procedure of registration in Employment Exchange. He was accompanied by Subhasis Chakraborty, Dy. Director of Employment and other Senior Officials of Government of West Bengal. Prof. Aloka Mukherjee, Programme Officer of Victoria Institution for Girls’, Kolkata visited the camp site and encouraged the volunteers.

On 12th December 2008 Mr. Ranjit Mukherjee, Deputy Project Manager, Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project motivated the local people, specially youth to work for cleanliness and general health of the people. Mr. Bimal Mitra, in-charge of Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission Vocational Training Centre trained local youth on Electrical Wiring and Repairing of Electrical Instruments.

On 13th December 2008 an awareness programme was organised on Role of Voluntary Organization in Protection of Rights. Programme officer of the unit addressed the gathering of local people and NSS volunteers. Skill learning programme on Carpentry was also organised on that day. The trainer was Mr. Partha Sarkar of Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission Vocational Training Centre. Mrs. Soma Ganguly, eminent Choreographer and Dancer visited the camp site and encouraged the local people and volunteers.

On 14th December 2008 an free health checkup camp was organised. Dr. P.K. Das, Dr. Diptendu Banerjee, Dr. Tushar K. Chatterjee, Dr. P. Mondal and Dr. Chandi Charan Mondal offered free consultation and checkup. Free distribution of medicines were done under supervision of Dr. Sandip Mukherjee. Dr. Shyamal Ganguly sponsor all the medicines required. Free Blood Group Detection was done for 150 persons on that day. Swathya Bhabna Welfare Society arranged the Blood Group Detection Camp.

In the afternoon Prof. Sribas Goswami spoke on Guidelines for Formation of Self-Help Group. A Self-help group is organised. The name of the group is Mili Juli Kama Kariba. In the camp fire local people spontaneously performed dance, music and recitation along with NSS volunteers in four languages, e.g. Bengali, Hindi, Oriya and Telegu.

From 8th December to 13th December, 2008 Utsav 2008 was organised in the Serampore College Campus. On that occasion Book Fair, Handicraft Fair, Information Technology Fair and Food Park were organised. Cultural Programme by eminent Artists were also staged. On that occasion thousands of local people and outsiders visited Serampore College. A number of NSS Volunteers were deputed to keep the fair ground clean and tidy experts from KSWMIP guided the initiative. Cleanliness of the fair ground and cultural programme site brought appreciation for NSS.

A Socio-Economic survey is also conducted during 10-day camp, report of which is being sent along with this report. The self-help group formed during the camp is still functioning well. In collaboration with NSS unit of the college they are running a regular Tailoring School in the adopted slum area. Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission, Barrackpore is sending trainers regulars so that under privileged people in the area can earn more.

On 14th December, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Special Camp was inaugurated with welcome address by Dr. Lalchungnunga, Principal Serampore College. Chief Guest was Mr. Giridhari Saha, Vice Chairman Serampore Municipality. Mr. Shambhu Nath Roy, Chairman-in-Council, Sreampore Municipality and the Councilor of the area in which the adopted slum area is situated was present as Special Guest. Mr. Bimal Mitra, Superintendent, Vocational Training Centre, Ramakrishna Mission was also present in the inaugural ceremony. Mr. Ranjit Mukherjee, Dy. Project Manager (Social), Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project (KSWMIP) delivered keynote address on Health, Public Sanitation and Personal Hygiene.

2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. workshop on Basic Electrical was organized in the Camp area for the local youth this was the first lesson of Vocational Training on Electrical Repairing. The Trainer was Mr. Bimal Mitra from Barrackpore Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission. About 50 boys took part in the training. At the same time another Workshop was organize for the girl volunteers and young ladies of the adopted slum in the Chemistry Lecture Theater of the Serampore College. The Workshop was on Women Health. Resource persons from Sanhita conducted the Workshop with audio visual presentations. About 100 women participated.

From 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. cultural programme was organized in the Camp site. Boys and girls from the adopted slum area also participated.

15th December, 2009 activities of Special Camping Programme started with door to door survey on Health Awareness. From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dr. Sandip Mukherjee, Assistant Professor of Physiology, Serampore College delivered a talk on “Low Cost Food with High nutrition value”. An interactive session followed. At the same time i.e. from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Vocational Training on Basic Welding was conducted by Mr. Achintya Bhattacharyya of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission for the boys of the locality. From 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. cultural programme was organized in the Camp site. Boys and girls from the adopted slum area also participated.

16th December, 2009 a group of Volunteers engaged themselves in door to door survey in the slum area from 11:00 a.m. onwards. From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Prof. Dibyendu Ray, Assistant Professor of Physiology, Serampore College delivered a talk on “Prevention on common diseases through Health Awareness”. Interactive session was very interesting. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Club Room Mr. S. L. Biswas of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission taught the second lesson on Electrical Repairing as a part of Vocational Training for the local youth. From 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. cultural programme was organized in the Camp site. Boys and girls from the adopted slum area also participated. A quiz programme was conducted by the volunteers by the boys and girls of the adopted slum from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. It was very interesting.

17th December, 2009 a group of volunteers kept themselves busy in door to door survey of health awareness on 11:00 a.m. onwards. Mr. Sudipta Biswas, Yoga Therapist conducted a programme on “Prevention of diseases through yoga and other exercises”. Yoga and freehand demonstration were given by his disciples. Mr. Subrata Bose, Vice President, Hooghly Chamber of Commerce delivered a talk on “Social responsibility of citizens in general”. The programme was covered by the Anandabazar Patrika with photograph.

Mr. A.K. Sinha of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission delivered the second lesson on Welding from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Club Room as a part of the Vocational Training for the local youth. 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. cultural programme was organized in the Camp site. Boys and girls from the adopted slum area also participated. A debate was conducted by the volunteers by the boys and girls of the adopted slum from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. It was very interesting.

18th December, 2009 a group of volunteers, as usual, kept themselves busy in door to door survey of health awareness on 11:00 a.m. onwards. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mr. Aloke Chandra Adhikary, a resource person from Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project delivered a talk on “Immunization” in the camp area. Mothers of the adopted slum areas participated with enthusiasm. From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mr. Joydeep Banerjee, another resource person from KSWMIP delivered a talk on the “Problem of Addiction”. From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Club Room Mr. Samarendra Bhattacharyya of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission conducted Vocational Training on Automobile for the boys of the locality. 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. cultural programme was organized in the Camp site. Boys and girls from the adopted slum area also participated. A street drama was performed by the volunteers from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.

19th December, 2009 a group of volunteers, as usual, kept themselves busy in door to door survey of health awareness on 11:00 a.m. onwards. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Ms. Tanusree Mazumdar a resource person from KSWMIP delivered a talk with demonstration on “AIDS Prevention”. From 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ms. Kuhu Banerjee, Sociologist delivered a talk on “Life style education”, followed by an interaction. From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mr. Ramesh Mondal of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission conducted Vocational Training on Tailoring for boys and girls of the locality. From 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mr. Kunal Chatterjee, Sr. Superintendent, NSS Cell, Calcutta University expressed his observations about the NSS activities of Serampore College. He inspired volunteers present their and requested local youth to be prepared to help for success of NSS Projects.

5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. cultural programme was organized in the Camp site. Boys and girls from the adopted slum area also participated. Various interesting programme and stage rehearsal for camp fire were performed by volunteers from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

On 20th December, 2009, the last day of the Seven Days Special Camping Programme a Free Health Check up was organized for the slum people. Sasthya Bhavna Welfare Society sent four Doctors for pre consultation. Medicine was also supplied by the NSS Units in a few cases by courtesy of Dr. Shyamal Ganguly, a Medical Practitioner.

From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. boys and girls of adopted area participated in Games & Sports organized as a part of a Camping Programme. Prizes were given away to the successful participants and consolation gifts were given to rest.

Dr. Kanchan Dutta, Secretary, Serampore Sarada Ramakrishna Sevak Sangha and Ms. Sagata Bhattacharyya, Editor, Hooghly Janasamyog delivered talks on “Motivation of NSS Volunteers and Local Youth”. Interactive session followed.

Cultural Programme before Camp Fire was participated by huge number of local people. They appreciated the NSS Volunteers for organizing such activities. Last Day activities were over by 9:30 p.m.

It is noteworthy that group meetings were held at 4:30 p.m. from 14th to 19th for preparation of daily report. Lunch was provided at 1:00 p.m. everyday for registered Volunteers, helping local youth and resource persons. Tea and Snacks were provided for participants of awareness programme and vocational training at 4:00 p.m. everyday during camp.

Activities of Year 2009-10

On 19th April 2009 NSS unit started a permanent vocational training centre in the adopted slum area. Mr. Bimal Mitra, Co-ordinator of Vocational Training Centre Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission Barrackpore inaugurated the training school. Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission is sending trainers for vocational training school every weekend since 2nd May 2009.

On 26th May 2009 NSS cell of Calcutta University organized a programme in the Centenary Hall of College Street Campus. In that programme, Programme Office of NSS unit Serampore College spoke on success story and challenges of NSS programme in adopted area.

On 5th June 2009 Environment Day was celebrated in the Adopted Area. The theme was “Your planet needs you – unite to combat climate change”. Speakers were Mr. Amitabha Banerjee, Mr. Harish Pradhan and Mr. Sribas Goswami. Volunteers and people from adopted area sang relevant songs for awareness.

Japanese delegate along with high officials of KMDA came to Serampore College on 22nd June 2009 to meet programme officer and NSS volunteers. Members of the delegation highly appreciated the activities of the NSS unit of Serampore College.

General orientation programme for newly enrolled volunteers was organized in the Arts block of the college on 11th July 2009.

On 18th July 2009 workshop on Self Motivation and Time Management was organized for newly enrolled volunteers. Experts in the field were invited on the occasion. Programme officers of the NSS units of Nabagram Hiralal Paul College, Serampore Girls’ College, Vidyasagar Mahavidyalaya and Bidhan Chandra College also spoke to our volunteers on the occasion.

On 25th July 2009 Serampore College NSS unit convened a District Level Convention at Serampore College. The Theme was youth motivation for clean environment. Dr. A.N. Dey, State Liaison Officer NSS, West Bengal inaugurated the programme. Mr. Nitish Biswas, Programme Co-ordinator, NSS Cell, Calcutta University was the Chief Guest. Mr. Kaoru Nakajima, Project Manager, KSWMIP and Mr. Ranjit Mukherjee, Deputy Project Manager, KSWMIP were guest of honour of the occasion. About 400 NSS volunteers from six colleges of Hooghly District participated in the programme. A website of NSS unit of Serampore College for Audio Visual Display of Community participation in social work was launched on the occasion by Dr. A.N.Dey. Principal and programme office thanked all principals, teaching, non-teaching staff and NSS volunteers for participation. In the Technical sessions Ms. Trisha Sensharma, Sociologist made a presentation on Behaviour change communication for clean environment. Mr. Aloke Chandra Adhikari explained Kolkata Solid Waste Management Improvement Project (KSWMIP) and Mr. Gautam Ghosh answered the students questions. Mr. Jaydip Banerjee spoke on NSS volunteers participation for successful implementation of Solid Waste Management Project. The programme ended with singing of a self composed song by a volunteer.

On 5th August 2009 NSS volunteers themselves prepared more than 200 Rakhi bands and tied on the hands of more than 200 people from different cast, creed and religion inside and outside of college campus.

Independence day was celebrated by the volunteers of the unit with due honour. They assembled in the morning to participate in the flag hoisting and cultural programme. In the evening they performed in a drama in the Town Hall of Serampore. The drama was on a relevant topic and was composed and directed by the volunteers themselves.

Birth Anniversary of Dr. William Carey founder of the college was duly observed on 17th August 2009. NSS volunteers participated in the programme including morning procession.

On 22nd August 2009 more than 20 volunteers participated in a programme on national integration in the Raja Peary Mohan College, Uttarpara. Students presented to plays on relevant topics composed and directed by themselves.

On 4th September 2009 an Academic Consultation was organized in the CLRC Hall on the problems of rehabilitation of ragpickers. A details report of survey on the condition of rag pickers was prepared on the occasion. Audio visual presentation was thought provoking. Contribution of teachers and volunteers present in the consultation was highly appreciated by experts.

Teachers Day was celebrated on 5th September 2009 with due honour by the volunteers. They themselves prepared colourful cards and meaningful messages and presented those to all the teachers of the colleges, to get their blessings on the occasion.

On 19th September 2009 NSS volunteers of the unit participated in a District Level convention organized in Nabagram Hiralal Paul College.

40 years of NSS was completed on 24th September 2009. That day was included in the Puja Holidays. NSS volunteers in spite of enthusiasm of Durga Shasti assembled and discussed on the success and failure of NSS during last 40 years.

On 14th November 2009 Children’s Day was celebrated in the adopted area. NSS volunteers planned interesting programme for slum dweller children. Children from the area also participated whole heartedly.

On 15th November 2009, NSS volunteers organized a day long awareness programme on the occasion of Health Fair 2009 in the Serampore Rajbati Compound.

On 19th November 2009, Free Health Checkup Programme was organized by the units. Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society sent 4 Doctors for the service of about 100 patients. Eye checkup was also organized.

From 29th November to 1st December 2009 Science Festival was organized in the Serampore College Campus. NSS Units of the college organized Free Blood Group Detection Camp during the 3 day festival. Social Awareness Programme through display of posters and video show were also organized.

On 1st December 2009 two Programme Officers and ten volunteers participated in the NSS Awareness and World AIDS Day programme in the Centenary Hall of Calcutta University. They also participated in the rally from College Street Campus of C.U. to Bethune College.

On 12th December 2010 Twenty volunteer participated in a District Level Workshop in the Serampore Girls’ College. Programme Officer of Unit I, Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya deliver a talk human rights and health.

On 20th December 2010, Free Health Checkup Camp was organized in the adopted area from 11:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m. About 200 people from the area availed the opportunity.

On 15th January 2010 two programme officer and twenty volunteers participated in a District Level Workshop in the Bidhan Chandra College at Rishra. Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya programme officer unit I delivered a talk on “Motivation”. Dr. Bhattacharyya delivered another talk on 23rd January 2010 during the special camping programme on Bidhan Chandra College, Rishra.

On 18th January 2010 NSS volunteers started door to door intensive household survey in slum areas of Serampore. They have completed more than 8000 household within 31st March 2010.

Little Magazine Fair was organized in the Gandhi Maidan near Railway Station. From 19th January 2010 to 22nd January 2010. NSS volunteers conducted Social Awareness Programme in the fair ground from their pavilion.

On 21st January 2010 two programme officer and twenty volunteers from units participated in a seminar on “Disaster Management” in the Centenary Hall, C.U. They also participated in the Ambedkar Utsav at C.U. on the same day.

On 26th January 2010 Republic Day was celebrated in the Serampore College Campus. Volunteers of both the units participated. It is noteworthy Ms. Debbani Bhar, a volunteer of Unit I participated in the Republic Day Parade at Raj Path, New Delhi. She is the sole representative of the Calcutta University, NSS Cell in this year Republic Day Parade.

On 6th February 2010, 40 student volunteers along with their programme officer went to Masat to participate in a District Level Workshop on Global Warming. NSS volunteers took this opportunity and conducted a survey on 100 college students in rural area. Report is duly prepared under guidance of Prof. Jayatri Chakraborty, Assistant Professor in Education, Serampore College.

On 15th February 2010, NSS unit organized a First Aid camp on the occasion Annual Athletic Meet. 4 stretchers given by Calcutta University, NSS Cell was utilized for the first time. Dr. P.K. Das, Secretary, Swasthya Bhabna Welfare Society trained NSS volunteers.

On 6th March 2010, Women’s Day was observed with due honour by the NSS volunteer of both the units. An awareness programme was organized in the Adopted Area. People from adopted area participated in the Cultural Programme.

On 19th March 2010, Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya, Programme Officer, NSS Unit I delivered a talk on “Preservation of Indian Heritage: Role of NSS Volunteers” in the Serampore Girls’ College on the occasion of inauguration of their special camping programme.

On 27th March 2010, A seminar on preservation of local heritage was organized in CLRC Hall of Serampore College premises. Mr. Yajneshwar Chowdhury, Renowned Researcher on Local History Chaired the Seminar. Dr. Buddhadeb Bandyopadhyay, Dr. Malay Shankar Bhattacharyya, Mr. Biswanath Bandyopadhyay, Mr. Arindam Chakraborty and Mr. Shekhar Bhowmick were among the speakers. The seminar was organized in collaboration with Gram Janapad, Kolkata and Tamluk Itihas Charcha Kendra, Purba Medinipore.

On the same day after 4 p.m. Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony for the NSS Units was organized. Ms. Suparna Ghosh was awarded as The Best Volunteer of the Year 2009-2010. Ms. Debbani Bhar was awarded for her participation in Republic Day Parade in New Delhi and Ms. Mousumi Majumder was awarded for her participation in Winter Adventure Programme in Himachal Pradesh during 2009-2010.

Besides the above mentioned programmes volunteers of NSS units organized regular weekly meetings with the slum dwellers in the adopted areas for solution of the problems in the area. They worked together with the local people to keep the adopted area clean throughout the year. Condition of public toilets, drains, taps were improved with the help of the appropriate authorities. A Self Help Group, organized during last year’s special camping programme contributed a lot in training of unemployed youth. Tailoring School for unemployed youth and housewives in the adopted slum area established by the NSS unit conducted a certificate course. 4 ladies of the area successfully completed the course. These ladies were issued certificate and incentive on 27th March 2010.

NSS unit of the College is running the Placement Cell since August, 2007. NSS unit is running Career Corner sponsored by the Labour Department, Government of West Bengal.

Volunteers of the unit publish decorated wall magazine on different occasions. Some of the volunteers are actively involved in reporting and Photo Journalism of a Bengali Weekly, “Hooghly Janasamjyog”.

A new website is launched by the NSS units of Serampore College on 25th July 2010 by Dr. A.N. Dey, State Liaison Officer, NSS, Govt. of West Bengal. Social work activities of NSS units are demonstrated through the website. The website is www.socialworknss.org.

It is noteworthy that Serampore College is working as Headquarters for all Ten NSS units under Calcutta University in Hooghly District. Several District Committee meetings were convened during 2009-2010. Student volunteers helped a lot in arranging hospitality for the visiting programme officer from the different colleges of the districts.

7-day Special Camping Programme

On 13th December 2010, 50 volunteers of NSS Unit I and 50 volunteers of Unit II reported near Line no. 9 of India Jute Mill, Serampore, adjacent to Utkal Primary School for 7-day Special Camping Programme. Fitting of Samiyana and other decorations required more than an hour. Inaugural Ceremony started at 11:30 a.m. Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. Amal Kumar Dutta, Vice-Principal, Serampore College. Mr. Amiya Mukherjee, Chairman, Serampore Municipality and Chief Guest of the occasion. praised NSS volunteers for their social service. Mr. Sambhunath Roy, Councillor, Ward No. 12 assured his help for any venture of NSS.

After the Inaugural Ceremony, Vocational Training was conducted for the unemployed youth of the area. The resource person of the day was Mr. Bimal Mitra, Co-ordinator, Vocational Training Centre, Ramkrishna Vivekananda Mission, Barrackpore.

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. the Cultural Programme was organised with participation of Local People.

On 14th December 2010, Door to Door Survey on Nutrition and Personal Hygiene was launched. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mr. Sudipta Biswas delivered a talk on Necessity of Yoga and Exercise in Daily Life as a part of awareness programme. Mr. S.L. Biswas of Vocational Training Centre, RKVM, Barrackpore gave lesson on Basic Electrical for unemployed youth in Utkal Primary School. Cultural Programme was organised in the evening.

On 15th December 2010, besides survey and cultural programme Mr. G.C. Saha trained local youth on Automobile as a part of Vocational Training in Utkal Primary School. In the Camp site two awareness programmes were organised. Mr. Aloke Chandra Adhikari delivered a talk on Immunization while Mr. Jaydeep Banerjee organised an interactive programme Problems of Addiction.

On 16th December 2010, Ms. Trisha Sensharma delivered a talk on Environment-Health Hygiene and Sanitation with special reference to Waste Management at home and outside. Vocational Training on Welding was given by Mr. Achintya Bhattacharyya, RKVM, Barrackpore. Survey and Cultural Programme was held as per schedule.

On 17th December 2010, Free Health Check up camp was organised. 6 doctors from Swasthya Bhavna Welfare Society prescribed medicine for more than 150 patients between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m. a discussion on Prevention of AIDS was organised with participation of local people resource persons were Dr. P.K. Das, Mrs. Jyoti Das, Mrs. Tanushree Mazumdar. Survey, Vocational Training and Cultural Programme were held as per routine.

On 18th December 2010, Awareness Programme on Life Skill Education was conducted by Ms. Kuhu Banerjee, Consultant, SENES India Consultancy Limited. Vocational Training on Welding was imparted by Mr. A.K. Sinha, RKVM, Barrackpore. Survey and Cultural Programme was held as usual.

On 19th December 2010, Games and Sports were organised in the adopted area. More than 300 local people participated. Prize giving ceremony started from 5 p.m. in which Mr. Sukanta Banerjee, Eminent Footballer was present as Chief Guest. A grand cultural show was presented by the local people before camp fire. The 7-day camp was concluded with camp fire by 8 p.m.

N.B.:

  • Group meetings were held everyday after 5:30 p.m. for preparation of daily reports.
  • Lunch was provided at 1 p.m. everyday for registered volunteers, helping local youth and resource persons.
  • Tea and Snacks were provided for participants of Awareness Programmes, Cultural Programmes and Vocational Trainings.
  • Tiffin packets were provided for sports participants and Prizes were given to those who stood 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the sports events.

Activities of Year 2010-11

In the month of April 10 Psychological Couselling was conducted by Mr. Mohit Ranadip of MON Foundation, Kolkata in the NSS office every Saturday. A few Volunteers were engaged for enrollment and official works for that purpose.

Campus Interviews were organised on 10th and 24th April 2010. Career Corner Functions were done regularly.

On 9th May 2010, twenty Volunteers and two Programme Officers participated in the Post Centenary Golden Jubilee Celebration of Rabindranath Tagore in the Centenary Hall, Calcutta University.

Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya, Programme officer, Unit I, delivered a talk on ‘Rabindranath in the field of Social Works’. Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya participated in the three day National Workshop on Human Rights at TORC, Narendrapur from 2nd to 5th June 2010.

On 4th June 2010, a Seminar on Global Warming was organised in collaboration with Swasthya Bhabana Welfare Society as a part of Environment Day celebration.

Ms. Mousumi Majumdar and Ms. Suparna Ghosh, Volunteers of NSS Unit I participated in the National Level Tracking and Mountenering from Uttarkashi to Gomukh as a part of Adventure Programme between 19th June and 6th July 2010.

Two Orientation Programmes were organised on 17th and 24th July 2010 for newly enrolled volunteers.

On 28th August 2010 the 1st workshop on Community Based Disaster Management was organised in the CLRC Hall. The theme was Fire Safety: Citizen’s Responsibility. Speaker was Mr. Debopriyo Biswas, Additional Director General, Fire and Emergency Service, Govt. of West Bengal. Students were trained to use Fire Extinguisher and other safety equipments by the senior officers of the service.

Celebration of Common Wealth Games 2010 was organised in the college on 4th Sept. 2010. Students participated in essay, poster, quiz, debate, music and dance competitions. In this connection students prepare a booklet of 200 questions and answers related to common Wealth Country and Common Wealth Games. Mr. Nitish Biswas, co-ordinator, NSS Cell, C.U. was present .

As 5th Sept. 2010 was a Sunday, Tearchers’ Day was celebrated on 6th Sept. 2010 by the volunteers. Volunteers themselves prepared Greetings Cards for all individual teachers of the college.

On 11th Sept 2010 a new batch of ladies from the adopted area started their the Tailoring Course in the vocational training centre run by the NSS Units in the Adopted Slum in ward no. 12 of Serampore Municipality. A programme was organised on that occasion.

On 18th Sept. 2010 a Special Orientation Programme for newly enrolled volunteers were organised.

Both the programme officers participated in the NSS Day Celebration organised by the University of Calcutta. Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya delivered a Speech on Youth Motivation in the East Calcutta Girls’ College, Lake Town, Kolkata.

Blood Donation Camp was organized on 30th Sept., 2010 in collaboration with PCSU, Serampore College Unit . Mr. Souvik Dasgupta, Programme Officer, Unit II donated blood along with others .

On 1st and 2nd Oct. 2010 twenty volunteers of National Service Scheme participated in a Nature Camp organised by Shimultala Conservationists, Shimultala, Hooghly.

On 13th Nov. 2010 Children’s Day was celebrated in the Adopted Area with participation from local children. Some volunteers presented music and dance for the children and guardians present on the occasion.

Between 25th and 30th Nov. 2010 Handicrafts made by the volunteers of the NSS Units were displayed in the Utsav, 2010.

Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya delivered a Speech on NSS activities for Technical Students in the Government College of Textile Engineering, Serampore.

On 6th Dec. 2010 forty volunteers participated in the programme at centenary Hall, Calcutta University.

13th to 19th Dec. 2010 a Special Camping Programme on Health, Public Sanitation and Personal Hygiene was organised in the Adopted Area. Daily workshops on awareness, Vocational Training, Free Health Check up, Socio-economic survey, games and sports for local people were some of the features of the camp.

On 20th Dec. 2010, 32 volunteers, 2 programme officers and 2 other teachers participated in the Foundation Day Lecture delivered by Mr. Hamid Ansari, Vice President of India in the Centenary Hall, Calcuta University.

On 24th Dec. 2010 Dr. Prabhakar Bhattachryya represented Calcutta University in a NSS Programme organised by the Burdwan University in Rabindra Bhavana at Burdwan.

From the very beginning of the year 2011 volunteers of both the units started preparation of celebration of National Youth Day. State Level and University Level felicitation was held on 12th January in the Centenary Hall of the Calcutta University. Our college got several awards. A rally from College Street campus of C.U to the Ancestral House of Swami Vivekananda was also organised. 50 volunteers from both the units walked in the rally.

NSS units of Serampore College celebrated Youth Day on 14th January 2011 by organising workshop on ‘Employment Opportunities for Degree College Students’. Mr. Kunal Chakraborty, Deputy Director of Employment, District Employment Exchange, Serampore was the main speaker. Mr. S. K. Gupta, Director, Narendranath Institute spoke on Job opportunities in Defense. Volunteers performed music, dance etc. relevant for the occasion.

In the evenning of 14th January 2011, Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya, started for Winter Adventure Camp along with two volunteers, Mr. Nilabja Gupta and Mr. Ujjal Malo. They came back on 27th January 2011 (separate report of Winter Adventure Camp).

Republic Day was celebrated in the college campus on 26th January 2011 as usual. NSS volunteers participated in the programme with due honour and presented dance and chorus song.

1st March 2011 Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya, visited the Special Camping Programme of Raja Pearymohan College at Bolio Bagan, Uttarpara. Dr. Bhattacharyya spoke on ‘Motivation for Social Work’.

ON 2ND March 2011 Dr. Bhattacharyya visited Special Camping Programme of Nabagram Hiralal Paul College in the Chai Devi Basti at Konnagar. There he spoke on Health, Public Sanitation and Personal Hygiene.

On the Women’s Day that is on 8th March 2011, Dr. Bhattacharyya was invited to deliver a speech in Serampore Girls’ College on the occasion of the inauguration of Special Camping Programme of that college.

Women’s Day was celebrated this year on 5th March 2011. Ms. Indrani Sen, former student of the college delivered a talk on relevance of such celebration. Mr. Prakash Pal, Reporter, Ananda Bazar Patrika also spoke on the occasion. A debate was organised in which volunteers participated. Dance and music were also part of the programme.

A talk on Legal Awareness was delivered by Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya at Biramnagar, Singur on 11th March 2011 as a part of Special Camping Programme organised by Serampore Girls’ College in that place.

On 24th March 2011 Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya delivered a lecture on “Youth Development and NSS” in the Maharani Kashiswari College, Kolkata.

On 26th March 2011 a seminar was organised in collaboration with Councelling Cell of Serampore College. Dr. Sadhan Chakroborty, Professor and Head of the Department of Jadavpur University, Dr. Sougatsa Basu, Associate Professor, Dept. of Psychology, Calcutta University and Mr. Mohit Ranadip of MON Foundation were main speakers. Dr. Prabhakar Bhatacharyya along with a few volunteers visited Vidyasagar Mahavidyalaya at Mosat and Mohitosh Nandi Mahavidyalaya at Jangipara on 29th March 2011, on the occasion of Special Camping Programme of the two colleges. Dr. Bhattacharyya delivered a talk on “Youth Motivation” in the Valedictory Programme at Mohitosh Nandi Mahavidyalaya.

District Level Cultural Competition was organised on 31st March 2011. All colleges of the District XI were invited to participate in six events. On the same day an workshop on ‘Team Skill and Leadership’ was organised in collaboration with Counselling Cell. Teachers and students from different colleges participated in the workshop. Some eminent citizens of the locality were also present.

Besides the above mentioned programmes volunteers of NSS Units organised regular weekly meetings with the slum dwellers in the adopted areas for solution of the problems in the area. They worked together with the local people to keep the adopted area clean through out the year. Condition of public toilets, drains, taps were improved with the help oh the appropriate authorities. A Self Help Group, organised during Special Camping Programme contributed a lot in training of unemployed youth. Tailoring school for unemployed youth and house wives in the adopted slum areas established by the NSS Units conducted a certificate course.

7th March, 2013 A seminar on Presentation of Heritage & Popular Memory was organized jointly with SCTA. Speakers were Ms. Kristina Djurhuus Christiansen, Danish Anthropologist and Mr. Souradip Bhattacharyya, Researcher, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences.
8th March, 2013 Women’s Day celebrated in the college. Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya delivered a talk on the occasion in the Netaji Bhavan Hall of Serampore Girls’ College.
24th March, 2013 Volunteers participated in the First Aid Training Camp On Disaster Management organized by C.U. at Rowing Club, Kolkata.
